The edition from which this e-text was transcribed was printed in the Devanāgarī script. The electronic text below is in a lossless transliteration using the Latin alphabet. The transliteration scheme used is the IAST (The International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration). IAST differs in small ways from ISO 15919, but is preferred by most working Sanskrit scholars. Conversion of this file to ISO 15919 can be achieved by performing the following replacements throughout the file: ṛ -> r̥ and ṃ -> ṁ

Word division is marked with a space, where sandhi allows, not with sandhi-akṣaras or conjunct glyphs as in Devanāgarī (i.e., "ity evam" not "ityevam".)

Initial vowel elision for avagraha is reversed and marked with a + sign: e.g., "prathamo+adhyāyaḥ"

Philipp Maas: Compared his own data input with the e-text created by Muneo Tokunaga, for the purpose of eliminating typing errors. Dominik Wujastyk: Converted document from MS Word to TEI-encoded XML. Dominik Wujastyk: Distinguished segmentation of sūtras and bhāṣya. Processed the sutra numbers into xml:id counters in attributes. Tidied up the encoding in many ways. Changed all the seg markup to div markup, and type="bhāṣya" to type="commentary" to take advantage of the css styling for the text/commentary distinction. Added another set of div markers enclosing the sūtra+bhāṣya text groups. Previously, Philologic would only display either sūtra or bhāṣya, but not both. This will allow Philologic to display the whole unit as a unit. Also tidied up some details; added type="pāda" to the top level divisions. Replaced 02bc with 0027. Put the sutra numbering into label tags Refactored the text to follow example 3 of the SARIT simple guidelines, i.e., putting each sutra+bhasya into a div element, each sutra in a quote element and each paragraph of bhasya in a paragraph element. Started adapting the text to be use with Upama. Further revision history to be seen from git history.

atītānāgataṃ svarūpato+asty adhvabhedād dharmāṇām

bhaviṣyadvyaktikam anāgataṃ bhūtavyaktikam atītaṃ vyāpāropārūḍhaṃ vartamānaṃ, trayaṃ caitad vastu jñānasya jñeyam. yadi caitat svarūpato nābhaviṣyan nedaṃ nirviṣayaṃ jñānam udapatsyata. tasmād atītānāgataṃ svarūpato+asti. bhogabhāgīyasya apavargabhāgīyasya vā karmaṇaḥ phalam utpitsu [...] nirupākhyam. taduddeśena tena nimittena kuśalajñānam. nimittaṃ vartamānīkaraṇe samarthaṃ nāpūrvopajanane siddhaṃ nimittaṃ naimittikasya viśeṣānugrahaṃ kurute nāpūrvam eva dadhi utpādayatīti.

dharmī cānekadharmasvabhāvas tasyādhvabhedena dharmāḥ pratyavasthitāḥ yathā vartamānaṃ vyaktiviśeṣāpannaṃ dravyato+asti naivam atītam anāgataṃ ca. kiṃ tarhi? svenaiva vyaṅgyena svarūpeṇānāgatam asti. svena cānubhūtavyaktikena atītam asti vartamānasyaiva tv adhvanaḥ svarūpato vyaktir iti na sā bhavaty atītānāgatayor adhvanoḥ. ekasya cādhvanaḥ samaye dvāv adhvanau dharmisamanvāgatau na bhavata eveti nābhūtvā bhāvas trayāṇām adhvanām.

te vyaktasūkṣmā guṇātmānaḥ.

te khalv amī tryadhvano dharmā vartamānā vyaktātmāno+atītānāgatāḥ sūkṣmātmānaḥ ṣaḍaviśeṣasvarūpāḥ. sarvam idaṃ guṇānāṃ saṃniveśaviśeṣamātram iti paramārthato guṇātmānaḥ. tathā ca śāstrānuśāsanam —

`` guṇānāṃ paramaṃ rūpaṃ na dṛṣṭipatham ṛcchati / yat tu dṛṣṭipathaṃ prāptaṃ tan māyeva sutucchakam // ''

yadā sarve guṇāḥ katham ekaḥ śabda ekam indriyam

pariṇāmaikatvād vastutattvam

prakhyāpravṛttisthitiśīlānāṃ guṇānāṃ grahaṇātmakānāṃ karaṇabhāvenaikaḥ pariṇāmaḥ śrotrendriyaṃ, grāhyātmakānāṃ śabdabhāvenaikaḥ pariṇāmaḥ śabdo viṣayaḥ. śabdādīnāṃ mūrtisamānajātīyānām ekaḥ pariṇāmaḥ pṛthivīparamāṇuḥ. teṣāṃ ekaḥ pariṇāmaḥ pṛthivī gaur vṛkṣaḥ parvata ityevamādiḥ. bhūtāntareṣv api snehauṣṇyapraṇāmitvād upādāya sāmānyam ekavikārārambhaḥ samādheyaḥ.

nāsty artho vijñānavisahacaraḥ, vijñānam arthavisahacaraṃ asti amuyā diśā ye vastusvarūpam apahnuvate jñānaparikalpanāmātraṃ vastu svapnaviṣayopamam, na tu paramārthato+astīti te tatheti pratyupasthitam idaṃ svamāhātmyena vastu katham apramāṇātmakena vikalpajñānabalena vastu svayam upagṛhya tad evāpalapantaḥ śraddheyavacanāḥ syuḥ.

kutaś caitad anyāyyam —

vastusāmye cittabhedāt tayor viviktaḥ panthāḥ

bahucittālambanībhūtam ekaṃ vastu sādhāraṇaṃ, tat khalu naikacittatantraṃ bhavati anekacittaparikalpitamapi na bhavati. kiṃtu svapratiṣṭham. kathaṃ, vastusāmye cittabhedāt. dharmāpekṣaṃ cittasya vastusāmye 'pi sukhajñānaṃ bhavati. tata evādharmāpekṣaṃ ahitānāṃ duḥkhajñānam tasmād evāvidyāpekṣaṃ mūḍhajñānaṃ. tata eva samyagjñānāpekṣaṃ mādhyasthyajñānam. tasmād vastujñānayor grāhyagrahaṇabhedād bhinnayor viviktaḥ panthāḥ. nānayoḥ saṃkaragandho 'py astīti.

vastu triguṇaṃ calaṃ ca guṇavṛttam iti dharmādinimittaṃ cāpekṣya cittair abhisaṃbadhyate. nimittānurūpasya cotpadyamānasya pratyayasya tena tenātmanā hetur bhavati. kecid āhuḥ. jñānasahabhūr evārtho bhogyatvāt sukhādivat. te 'pi sādhāraṇatvaṃ bādhamānāḥ pūrvottarakṣaṇeṣu vastusvarūpam evāpahnuvate.

na caikacittatantraṃ vastu tadapramāṇakaṃ tadā kiṃ syāt

ekacittatantraṃ ced vastu syāt taccitte vyagre parāsakte niruddhe vā tenāparāmṛṣṭam anyasya cāviṣayībhūtam, tadā tad apramāṇakam agṛhītasvabhāvaṃ tadānīṃ kiṃ tat syāt. saṃbadhyamānaṃ vā punaś cittena kuta utpadyeta. āsyānupasthitā bhāgās te cāsya na syuḥ nāsti pṛṣṭham ity udaram api na syād eva. tasmāt svatantro 'rthaḥ sarvapuruṣasādhāraṇaḥ svatantrāṇi ca cittāni pratipuruṣaṃ pravartante tayoś ca saṃbandhād upalabdhiḥ puruṣasya bhogaḥ.

taduparāgāpekṣitvāc cittasya vastu jñātājñātam

ayaskāntamaṇikalpā viṣayā, ayaḥsadharmakaṃ cittam abhisaṃbandhyoparañjayanti. yena ca viṣayeṇoparaktaṃ cittaṃ sa viṣayo jñātaḥ tato 'nyaḥ punar ajñātaḥ vastuno jñātājñātasvarūpatvāt pariṇāmi cittam. 4.17

yasya tu tad eva cittaṃ viṣayas tasya —

sadā jñātāś cittavṛttayas [tatprabhoḥ puruṣasyāpariṇāmitvāt]

yadi cittavat prabhur api puruṣaḥ pariṇamet, tatas tadviṣayāś cittavṛttayaḥ cittasyeva śabdādiviṣayāḥ, jñātā ajñātāḥ api syuḥ sadā jñātatvaṃ manasaḥ tat prabhoḥ puruṣasyāpariṇāmitvam anumāpayati.

syād āśaṅkā --- cittam eva svābhāsaṃ viṣayābhāsaṃ ca bhaviṣyatīti

na tat svābhāsaṃ dṛśyatvāt

yathetarāṇīndriyāṇi śabdādayaś na svābhāsāni dṛśyatvāt. tathā mano 'pi pratyetavyam. na cāgnir atra dṛṣṭāntaḥ. na hy agnir ātmasvarūpam aprakāśaṃ prakāśayati. prakāśaś cāyaṃ prakāśyaprakāśakasaṃyoge dṛṣṭaḥ. na ca svarūpamātre 'sti saṃyogaḥ. kiṃca svābhāsaṃ cittam ity agrāhyam eva cittam syād iti. evaṃ śabdārthaḥ. tadyathā svātmapratiṣṭham ākāśam, apratiṣṭhitam iti svabuddhipracārapratisaṃvedanāt sattvānāṃ pravṛttir dṛśyate. kruddho 'haṃ bhīto 'ham amutra me rāgo 'mutra me krodha iti etat svabuddher agrahaṇe na yuktam iti.

ekasamaye cobhayānavadhāraṇam

na caikasmin kṣaṇe svaparobhayāvadhāraṇaṃ yuktaṃ, kṣaṇavādino yad bhavanaṃ saiva kriyā tad eva ca kārakam ity abhyupagamaḥ.

syān matiḥ svarasasanniruddhaṃ cittaṃ cittāntareṇa gṛhyata iti —

cittāntaradṛśye buddhibuddher atiprasaṅgaḥ smṛtisaṃkaraś ca

yadi cittaṃ cittāntareṇa gṛhyeta, buddhibuddhiḥ kena gṛhyate, sāpy anyayā sāpy anyayety atiprasaṅgaḥ. smṛtisaṃkaraś ca, yāvanto buddhibuddhīnām anubhavās tāvatyaḥ smṛtayaḥ prāpnuvanti. tatsaṃkarāc smṛtyanavadhāraṇaṃ buddhipratisaṃvedinaṃ puruṣam apalapadbhir vaināśikair ākulīkṛtam jagad iti. te bhoktṛsvarūpaṃ yatra kvacana kalpayanto na nyāyena saṃgacchante. kecit sattvamātram api parikalpyāsti sa sattvo ya etān pañca skandhān nikṣipyānyāṃś ca pratisaṃdadhātīty uktvā tata eva trasyanti. tathā skandhānāṃ mahānirvedāya virāgāyānutpādāya praśāntaye guror antike brahmacaryaṃ carāmīty uktvā punaḥ sattvam apahnuvate. sāṃkhyayogādayas tu pravādāḥ. svaśabdena puruṣam eva svāminaṃ cittasya bhoktāram abhyupayantīti.

katham —

citer apratisaṃkramāyās tadākārāpattau svabuddhisaṃvedanam

citir apratisaṃkramā. apratisaṃkramāyāḥ tadākārāpattiḥ. tadākārāpattau svabuddhisaṃvedanam. apariṇāminī hi bhoktṛśaktir apratisaṃkramā ca pariṇāminy arthe pratisaṃkrānteva tadvṛttim anupatantīvānupatantī. tasyāś ca prāptacaitanyopagrahasvarūpāyānukāramārtatayā buddhivṛttyaviśiṣṭā jñānavṛttir iti ākhyāyate. tathā coktam.

`` na pātālaṃ no vivaraṃ girīṇāṃ naivāndhakāraṃ kukṣayo nodadhīnām / guhā yasyāṃ nihitaṃ brahma śāśvataṃ buddhivṛttim aviśiṣṭāṃ kavayo vedayante '' iti.
