1. ayaṃ mahākavir amṛtabhānusūnuḥ śrīrājānakaratnākaro 'sya haravijayamahākāvyasya
pratisargasamāptau ‘iti bālabṛhaspatyanujīvino rājānakaratnākarasya kṛtau’ iti likha
ti sma. sa ca bālabṛhaspatyaparanāmā cippaṭajayāpīḍamahīpatir navamaśatakaprārambha eva
kaśmīradeśaṃ śaśāsa. ‘śrīcippaṭajayāpīḍo bṛhaspatyaparābhidhaḥ | lalitāpīḍajo rājā
śiśudeśyas tato 'bhavat_ ||’ iti rājataraṅgiṇī (4|680). tasmād ratnākarakavis tatsamaye
khristasaṃvatsarīyanavamaśatakaprārambha evāsīd iti kecit_. vastutas tv ayaṃ kaviḥ khristasaṃ
vatsarīyanavamaśatakasyottarabhāge 'vantivarmaṇo rājyakāle kaśmīrān maṇḍayāmāsa. yato
rājataraṅgiṇyām_ (5|39) ‘muktākaṇaḥ śivasvāmī kavir ānandavardhanaḥ | prathāṃ ratnākaraś cā
gāt sāmrājye 'vantivarmaṇaḥ ||' iti kahlaṇakavir babhāṇa. avantivarmarājyasamayas tu 855
mitāt khristābdād ārabhya 884 mitābdaparyantaṃ prasiddha eva. ratnākarakṛtiṣu (1) haravijaya
mahākāvyam_, (2) vakroktipañcāśikā, (3) dhvanigāthāpañjikā ceti granthatrayaṃ jñātam asti.
‘mā sma santu hi catvāraḥ prāyo ratnākarā ime | itīva sa kṛto dhātrā kaviratnākaro
'paraḥ ||’ iti rājaśekhareṇāpi ratnākaramahākaviḥ stutaḥ. asmin kāvye vasantatilakaccha
ndonibaddhā bahavaḥ sargāḥ santi. ata eva ‘vasantatilakārūḍhā vāgvallī gāḍhasaṅginī |
ratnākarasyotkalikā cakāsty ānanakānane ||’ iti suvṛttatilake kṣemendraḥ. ‘dugdhābdhīnāṃ
sahasraṃ na kusumalasitaṃ sadvasantāyutaṃ vā koṭir vā pārvaṇānāṃ suṣamaśaśabhṛtāṃ neṣadoṣātanā
nām | saṃpūrṇaṃ vā sudhābhiḥ puraṭaghaṭaśataṃ hanta dhanvantarer no pāṇisthaṃ cāru ratnākarasukavigirāṃ
merulakṣaṃ na mūlyam_ ||’ ity ādhunikasadāśiva-śaṃkara-śāstri-draviḍapraṇītaṃ ratnākarapraśaṃsāpa
dyam_.

kāvyaprakāśakartur mammaṭarājānakasya samakālīnaḥ kiṃcid evārvācīno vāsti. yataḥ pa
rikarālaṃkāraprakaraṇāntaṃ kāvyaprakāśaṃ nirmāya virate mammaṭarājānake śeṣagranthamaya
m evālakaḥ pūritavān_. “yad uktam_—‘kṛtaḥ śrīmammaṭācāryavaryaiḥ parikarāvadhiḥ | prabandhaḥ
pūritaḥ śeṣo vidhāyālakasūriṇā ||’ anyenāpy uktam_—‘kāvyaprakāśa iha ko 'pi ni
bandhakṛdbhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṛte 'pi kṛtināṃ rasatattvalābhaḥ | loke 'sti viśrutam idaṃ nitarāṃ
rasālaṃ bandhaprakāraracitasya taroḥ phalaṃ syāt_ ||” iti kāvyaprakāśa[ni]darśanānte
rājānakānandaḥ. kāvyaprakāśasaṃketasamāptau ca bahuṣu pustakeṣu ‘kṛtir iyaṃ rājānakamamma
ṭālakarucakānām_’ ity upalabhyate. bahugranthakartā rājānakarucako 'pi taddeśe prasiddha eva.
idaṃ haravijayakāvyaṃ kaśmīreṣv api viralapracāram asti. kevalaṃ gaṇeśarājānakasaṃgrahe
'sya kāvyasyaikaṃ bhūrjapattreṣu likhitaṃ pustakam asti. tatpratirūpakāṇy eva kaiścana gṛhītānīta
s tataḥ samupalabhyante kāśmīreṣu. ṭīkā(haravijayapadoddyota)pustakaṃ caikam evāśuddham_, samāptau
truṭitaṃ ca pūrvoktasya saṃgrahe 'sti. tatpratirūpakam evāsmābhir anyaiś ca tatratyair gṛhītam asti.
tatpratirūpakāṇy apahāyānyaddharavijayaṭīkāpustakaṃ nādyāpi dṛggocarībhūtam_. adhunā caikaṃ
mūlapustakaṃ prārambhe trayodaśasargahīnaṃ madhye ca dvitrapattra vikalaṃ prāyaḥ śuddhaṃ lāhoranagare

smabhyaṃ prahitam_. evaṃ dvitrāṇi mūlaṭīkāpustakāni samavalambya pañcāśatsargātmakasyāsya
nikhilakāvyalakṣaṇākrāntasya mahākāvyaśiromaṇer mudraṇe samudyuktāḥ smaḥ. asya katipaye
ślokāḥ kāvyaprakāśādiṣūdāhṛtāḥ santi. kāvyasyāsyābhyāsena mahatī kavitācāturī
samullasatīti kavir eva granthānte svayaṃ pratijānīte. yathā-‘haravijayamahākaveḥ pratijñāṃ śṛṇuta
kṛtapraṇayo mama prabandhe | api śiśurakaviḥ kaviḥ prabhāvād bhavati kaviś ca mahākaviḥ krameṇa ||’

dhūrjaṭiḥ śaṃkaro yuṣmabhyaṃ sukhāni śreyāṃsi diśatād vitaratu | kīdṛśaḥ | kuvalayastaba
kair nīlotpalagucchair abhirāmaṃ cāru yad dāma sragdāma tattulyo vikaṭacchavir bahalakāntiḥ
kālakūṭo viṣaṃ yasyāḥ, tathāvidhāṃ kaṇṭhaśriyaṃ dhārayan_ | ataś copahāreṣu pūjāsamayeṣu bhakta
janadayayā pīto yo dhūpadhūmas teneva malinām ity utprekṣā || atha dvitīyo 'rthaḥ—dhūrjaṭiḥ

siṃhanakhais tiryagvidāritaṃ saraktacchaṭaṃ hiraṇyakaśipor vakṣa iva | nṛsiṃhanakhabhinnaṃ sarudhi
racarcaṃ vakṣa iva gaganam iti bhinnakramo 'yam ivaśabdaḥ | ‘ivena samāso vibhaktyalopaḥ pūrva
padaprakṛtisvaratvaṃ ca’ iti samāsasya nityaṃ vidhānād bhinnakramatā na yujyata iti cet_,
maivam_ | sāmarthye sati samāsena bhavitavyam_ | bhinnaśabdāt paraṃ cevaśabdaḥ śruto na | tenāsya
sāmarthyam_ | anvayābhāvāt_ | yady evaṃ vakṣaḥśabdād anantaram asya prayogas tena ca saha samāsaḥ
prāpnoti | tenaivāsya saṃsargāt_ | nityādhikāre ca [vacanena] vigrahasya nirāsāt_ | evaṃ
tarhi cchandoviṣayatvād asya vākyasya na doṣaḥ | asati tatra cchandograhaṇe kathaṃ tadviṣayatvaṃ
niścinuma iti cet_, asty eva tanniścayanibandhanaṃ tatrabhavato bhāṣyakārasya vyavahāraḥ|
yad asau chandoviṣayam eva tatrodājahāra—‘kanye iva, vāsasī iva’ iti | anyatra ca lau
kikaprayoge bhinnakramam ivaśabdaṃ prayuyuje | [yathā—] ‘siṃhīrūpam iva’ ity atra siṃhīva rūpam i
tyartho vivakṣitaḥ | na tu rūpam iva siṃhīti | yas tu brūyāt_—‘chāndasa i(e)vāyaṃ
prayogaḥ, chandasy api tathā darśanāt_’ iti tanmate chandasi nityaṃ samāsavedanaṃ pūrvapadaprakṛ
tisvaratvam upalabhyatām iti kathaṃ bhinnakramatvam ivaśabdasya yuktiyuktaṃ syāt_ | laukike tu
prayoge na kaścid doṣaḥ | ity alaṃ vācālatayā || 5 ||
jyotīrasāśmānaḥ sphaṭikamaṇaya
s tadaśmanāṃ gṛhāṅgaṇaṃ dugdhasindhur iva yatra sphuratkarormitayollasati bhrājate | atrotprekṣā—
vadhūvadanendubimbasaṃdarśanād iveti | yo hi yoṣito vadanam indusamaṃ paśyati sa cetanācama
tkṛtirūpam ullāsam āsādayati | indubimbasaṃdarśanaṃ ca dugdhodadher ullāsahetuḥ || 6 ||

jālamārgo gavākṣamārgaḥ | yena ca karair jālamārgo 'valambitaḥ sa ai
ndrajālikatvād dagdham api kiṃcid utthāpayann avabhāsate | atra ca karāḥ pāṇayaḥ | jālaṃ
vyājaḥ | mārgaḥ saraṇiḥ sroto [prapañco] vā | utthāpanaṃ pratyujjīvanam_ || 8 ||

abhirāmaṃ navaṃ yadyauvanaṃ tasya pallavaḥ prasaro yāsāṃ tāḥ | pakṣe rāgasya lauhityasyānubandho
vidyate yeṣāṃ tāni ca pariṇāmadaśāyāḥ paripākadaśāyā avamarśena sparśena śūnyāni nava
yauvanāni cājaraṭhāni pattrāṇi yāsāṃ tābhiḥ | kuñjavīthī tarugahano mārgaḥ | puraṃdhrayo

śaśī tiraskṛtarucitvāt pātālāntaram iva praviśati | vailakṣyād iti bhāvaḥ | kaluṣatā

kuṭṭimāgrād vikṣipto 'nupayo
gān nirastaḥ | karā raśmayaḥ, karaś ca pāṇiḥ | tadāhanane patanasya yogyatvāt_ || 32 ||
patyur īśvarasya saṃbandhinām āliṅganānāṃ murajaviśeṣāṇāṃ nādena racitā sthitir yatra tādṛśī
yā vyarucat_ | ‘nānāprakāre 'py avanaddhajātes tripuṣkaraṃ vādyam ihādyam āhuḥ | tatrāṅkakāliṅgyaka
saṃjñakau dvāv anyas tathā cordhvakanāmadheyaḥ ||’ tasyāś ca nāyikātvapratīteḥ patyuḥ priyasyā
liṅganaviṣayeṇādareṇa citā vyāptā sthitir yasyā ity api yojanā || 33 ||

saroṣatayā tṛtīyam akṣi mukulībabhūva | vahnim ānetuṃ saṃkucitam_ | bhrukuṭyā vibhaṅgo vi
cchittiḥ | tasya dhanuṣaḥ kṣobho vimardaḥ || 52 ||
vikiran vistṛtaṃ kurvan_ | nedaṃ kāla
kūṭaṃ kiṃ tu huṃkṛtāgnidhūma ity apahnutiḥ || 53 ||
laḍitam ullasitam_ | laṭabhā manoharāḥ

jvālākalāpo jvālāsamūhas tasya pariṇāmaḥ paripākaḥ | ārān nikaṭāt_ || 55 ||
patattrakhaṇḍaṃ pakṣacchedaḥ | guñjā raktikā | udakaṇṭhata aicchat_ || 56 ||
vyabhidyata vyaha
nyata | kekī mayūraḥ | locane eva śaṅkū mayūrapicchācitau śarau || 57 ||
kirīṭī arjunaḥ |
sīkarair vyāptā diśo yena īdṛśo lalāṭāt kareṇa kṛtvā yasyārjunakopaprabhavo dharmāmbhaḥkaṇa
nicayaś ca kare kṣiptaḥ | ‘kṝ vikṣepe’ | ‘ṛcchaty ṝtām_’ iti guṇaḥ || 58 ||
ardhabhāge kucaṃ
pratibimbitacūḍāśaśāṅkaśakalam_ || 59 ||
......vīṇāvādanasamaye puro deśe gauryāḥ
sthitatvāt_ | ‘kāṇḍavīṇā’ ity api pāṭhe 'yam evārthaḥ || 60 ||
śailasutāyā mukhendubimbasya
darśanaṃ jalāñjalau pratibimbitatvāt_ || 61 ||
tasya saṃdheḥ parīkṣām ivārabdhukāmaṃ nayanaṃ
yasya vegān niriyāya || 62 ||
yasya saṃbandhino 'ṅghriyugalasyāṅgulīnāṃ nakhāṃśubhir viśadīkṛ
tapurodeśā vahniśikhābhiś ca kapiśāḥ praṇatiparāṇāṃ rudrāṇāṃ dṛśaḥ pāṇḍuramūlasya kama
lasya śobhāṃ dhārayanti || 63 ||
siddhasādhyanāmnām amarāṇāṃ samūhās taṃ devam upacerur asevanta |
caraṇayoḥ saparyā pūjā tayā bandhurā manohāriṇyaḥ, ata evāvandhyāḥ saphalāḥ saṃdhyā
yeṣāṃ te || 64 ||
iti śrībālabṛhaspatyanujīvino vāgīśvarāṅkasya vidyādhipatyaparanāmno mahākave rājānaka
śrīratnākarasya kṛtau ratnāṅke haravijaye mahākāvye purāripurīvarṇano nāma
prathamaḥ sargaḥ |
‘paryante pratisargaṃ ratnapadaṃ yatnataḥ prayuktavatā | nijanāmāṅkaṃ kavinā
viracitam etan mahākāvyam_ ||’ iti rājānakajayānakasūnor alakasya kṛtau haravijayaviṣama
padodyote prathamaḥ sargaḥ ||
